Pipeline

Pipeline and Gas Journal’s worldwide survey figures indicate that 118,623 miles (190,905 km) of pipelines are planned and under construction. Of these, 88,976 miles (143,193 km) represent projects in the planning and design phase; 29,647 miles (47,712 km) reflect pipelines in various stages of construction.

Transportation
Pipelines exist for the transport of crude and refined petroleum, fuels – such as oil, natural gas and biofuels – and other fluids including sewage, slurry, water. The best data, in 2014, gives a total of slightly less than 3.5 million km of pipeline in 120 countries of the world.*

Pumps and Pipeline
The transported oil is kept in motion by pump stations along the pipeline. The pump stations adjust the pressure, lost over time and tremendous distances, monitor the flow and other information about the transmittal product. Usually, ensuring the flows at speed of about 1 to 6 meters per second (3.3 to 19.7 ft/s).
Besides, pumping stations are coming for an aid when the higher through-put capacity is required in the pipeline. Simply another pipeline pumping station may be added to overcome the challenge.
There are a number of different types of pumps that can be found in the pumping stations. Most commonly used are centrifugal type for lower viscosity transported products, and PD pumps, such as screw or gear pumps, for higher viscosity products.
